about

"Belle Of The Ball" was a song I wrote a couple of years ago after I spent all night watching a DVD of Diana Krall performing live in Paris. I consider this song to be "pop-jazz" or "cute-swing", although I'm not sure if those are genres :) "Belle Of The Ball" features a good friend of mine and frequent musical collaborator, Kali Dancel, on vocals. Kali really makes this song come together, playing with soft and strong versions of her voice throughout. This song was solidified in the handful of times Kali and I performed it in public, but it really fleshed out with the addition of the saxophone and the melodica.

lyrics

I put your picture by the phone so I could look at you when you call
I pulled your scarf out of the drawer and I nailed it to the wall
I'll buy you ribbons and pearl, shiny things, and all I ask in return
Is to fall asleep in your arms and wake up without a care in the whole wide world

Never felt like I belong 'til I was deep in your arms
Holding fast and holding on, wanna stay, wanna stay with you
'Cause you're the light that shines on me
Burning bright for all to see, ever after, happily...

I pull your sweater out the drawer and I wrap it around my skin
Let it hold my beating heart as I'm holding you within
'Cause when your love is away and I can't feel the warmth of your embrace
I wrap your clothes around my body and let 'em hold, let 'em hold, let 'em hold me in your place

Never felt like I belong 'til I was deep in your arms
Holding fast and holding on, wanna stay, wanna stay with you
'Cause you're the light that shines on me
Burning bright for all to see, ever after, happily...
