"Midnight Sun" is a mix of country and folk with male/female harmonies playing off each other throughout the song. I've always loved male/female vocal harmonies, so I wanted to write something that would be a good canvas for that. Kali came in and just started singing a killer harmony over my part, so we both worked out the final touches and brought the song to life. The great part about this song is that Kali and I recorded the vocals simultaneously in the same room, and I really think that captured a very natural and organic vibe, both melody-wise and performance-wise. When Scott Zschomler added the slide guitar and backup vocals, the whole song was elevated.
lyrics
Wishing away my memories, everything in front of me
Keeping awake this flickering heart
Everyday I'm listening, searching the silence for something
Say what you want or don't say nothin'
My midnight sun, won't you shine on down?
And put a little light onto me
I'm keeping my word and I'm skipping this town
I could use a little company
Let a slow cold wind just carry my skin
To the edge of the light you've found
'Cause I'm withering away and it's killing me to say
That I'm counting on you to come around...
Following you is like falling into the few and forgotten
Fading away but still watching you...
Sucking on my last cigarette, tracing the shape of your silhouette
Saving a place for your dissonant soul
My midnight sun, won't you shine on down?
And put a little light onto me
I'm keeping my word and I'm skipping this town
I could use a little company
Let a slow cold wind just carry my skin
To the edge of the light you've found
'Cause I'm withering away and it's killing me to say
That I'm counting on you to come around...
I don't know where I've gone, where you've been
Where we're going... But i'm counting on you
Running behind the sun, blinding us
Just bury my bones... 'Cause I'm counting on you
My midnight sun, won't you shine on down?
And put a little light onto me
I'm keeping my word and I'm skipping this town
I could use a little company
Let a slow cold wind just carry my skin
To the edge of the light you've found
'Cause I'm withering away and it's killing me to say
That I'm counting on you...
