I wrote "Sleeping In The Rain" when I was deeply obsessed with Bob Dylan. I always loved how Dylan could make an acoustic guitar seem so powerful, and even though this song has more than just an acoustic guitar, I still wanted to capture that vibe. Initially... Then Scott Zschomler added the piano and the song took on a completely different personality, morphing into a kind-of folk-rock soft-pop song, if that makes any sense. The guitar solo was written with the Allman Brothers in mind. Vocally, I wanted something soft and soothing during the verses, strong and thick in the choruses. The lyrics change perspective right at the end of the song, which is always a funny trick to play with people :)
lyrics
I woke up tomorrow having dreamt of yesterday
Mustered up the guts to say the stuff I never say
Took back every word of it to take away the pain
Another night, I'm sleeping in the rain
Look away when everyone is looking back at me
Chase away my chances 'cause I'm choosing misery
And I'm changing everything until it all just looks the same
Another night, I'm sleeping in the rain
She said where have you been? Your dinner's getting cold
The kids are fast asleep and if we're quiet they won't know
He smiled politely as he made his way o'er to the door
Before he said, "Goodnight, and sleep tight..."
Keeping up with company is harder than it seems
You sew and stitch the cracks, but still I'm bursting at the seams
And looking back, those memories feel like a ball and chain
Another night, I'm sleeping in the rain
She said where have you been? Your dinner's getting cold
The kids are fast asleep and if we're quiet they won't know
He smiled politely as he made his way o'er to the door
Before he said, "Goodnight, and sleep tight..."
I don't get the joke but still I'm laughing way too loud
Lover can't be bothered, hope I make her father proud
And when I die a lonely soul and no one knows my name
Another night, I'm sleeping in the rain
He said where have you been? Your dinner's getting cold
The kids are fast asleep and if we're quiet they won't know
She smiled politely as she made her way o'er to the door
Before she said, "Goodnight, and sleep tight..."
I woke up tomorrow having dreamt of yesterday
Mustered up the guts to say the stuff I never say
Took back every word of it to take away the pain
Another night, I'm sleeping in the rain
